General Comments:

The Pilgrim 40 is an exceptional vessel and "Snug at Sea" (SAS) is an exceptional Pilgrim. As a quick glimpse of her equipment list will confirm, no expense has been spared by her owner in maintaining her to the highest standards.

The Owners’ feel that SAS is one of the best equipped Pilgrims in the Pacific Northwest. She is also one of the last Pilgrims built (Hull # 32 out of 42). Since her commissioning for export to the US from the Factory at New Castle Marine in Godderich Ontario in 1987, she has always been on the West Coast her entire life. Without a doubt, when you cruise her in local waters, she always is a head turner and certainly you need to prepare yourself for lots of questions since she generates tremendous interest both on and off the dock.

SAS is built on a full displacement hull, with a plumb bow and a fantail stern. Her graceful sheer, gently arched windows, business like stack, and teak/mahogany trim give the boat a nostalgic charm, and her sea-kindly hull and slow turning diesel provide exceptional fuel economy.

Helmsmen of all levels of experience will appreciate SAS's maneuverability. Few boats of her size have a bow thruster, coupled with her oversized rudder and straight tracking keel, take the stress out of close quarter maneuvering.

SAS's interior has a practical and comfortable layout. The large windows and skylight in the saloon make for a bright and airy interior; and the teak and mahogany woodwork, and teak and holly sole, give SAS her classic look. Her joinery work is simply second to none. The saloon features a built-in book case c/w bamboo woven cabinet doors and a built-in slide out tray, suitable for a keyboard and mouse. There is a removable expandable mahogany table, and a built-in settee that opens into a comfortable full sized berth to accommodate your “occasional” overnight guests.

Moving forward and to starboard, SAS is equipped with a fully functioning galley, including a large refrigerator/freezer, double stainless steel sink, propane stove and oven, microwave oven, deep cabinets and a breakfast bar. Athwartships from the galley is the head, with a luxuriously large shower stall and a Raritan electric flush head suitable for both fresh and salt water operation.

Few boats can boast of a “basement”, but that’s exactly what you’ll find on SAS. Through a large hatch in the galley sole and down a few stairs is a large storage area with plenty of room for gear, provisions and the quiet sound shielded Westerbeke 8kW generator. On long cruises, you'll find engine room checks are made easier by a door in the bulkhead that separates the basement from the engine room.

Built for live-aboard coastal cruising, SAS offers excellent protection from the elements in her comfortable and well equipped pilothouse. From here, the boat can be run in comfort during rain or shine. Her Morse engine & Vetus Thruster controls make shifting and throttle control effortless. With a dedicated Dell laptop for electronic charting, PC interface to the GPS and radar makes SAS a joy to operate. Along with her outstanding autopilot, depthsounder, DSC enabled VHF’s interfaced with the GPS and her redundant systems increase her margin of safety, and her reliable autopilot significantly reduces fatigue on long cruises. All of her electronics are well planned and thoughtfully laid out. The comfortable pilothouse also includes a convenient location for viewing hard copy charts and a bench seat wide enough for a couple to cruise in style and comfort.

When the weather is warm and the sun is shining, the helmsman can operate the boat while enjoying great views from either the flying bridge or the foredeck bench seat. A remote control for the autopilot and a RAM VHF mic on the flying bridge bring full functionality of these electronics to both the flybridge and the foredeck.

Down several steps from the pilothouse is the mahogany lined stateroom, complete with a queen sized berth and voluminous storage including a walk-in closet forward with built-in drawers. With the custom foam mattress, you may very well sleep better on the boat than at home. You can easily treat your mate to an early morning coffee or breakfast in bed using the convenient pass-through from the galley to the stateroom.

SAS features a high bow, covered side decks, and a sturdy rub rail. Her varnished teak caprails and deckhouse trim, mahogany foredeck seat, and bronze combination hawsepipe/mooring cleats help set her apart from other boats of her size. SAS is also equipped for serious coastal cruising with an electric windlass on a custom bracket, heavy ground tackle and an anchor fresh/salt water wash-down system. For water toys there is a 9’-6” Lancer RIB dinghy with an 8.0 hp Honda four stroke short shaft outboard. There is a Byte (12’) sailing dinghy and 2 inflatable single person kayaks to get you into the nook and crannies for exploring shorelines. All water toys are mounted on the top deck and are loaded/unloaded via a 600lb Brower low profile electric davit.

The aft deck (or “verandah”) has built-in fantail seating, an abundance of storage under the seats and in the separate lazarette, and pull out stairs for convenient access to the flybridge. The aft deck also doubles as a sun room with the addition of her custom designed Sunbrella enclosures.

Last but certainly not least, the mechanical equipment aboard SAS is top notch. Both her main Westerbeke engine and her 8kW Westerbeke generator are dependable and self-bleeding - a feature you'll definitely appreciate if you've ever had to bleed a diesel fuel system in a hot engine room surrounded by pitching and rolling seas. Her diesel fuel is well maintained with a top of the line Dual-Racor fuel filtering and a custom fuel conditioner/transfer system, Aquadrive anti-vibration system uses an integral thrust plate and soft engine mounts to dramatically reduce vibration and noise and her drip-less shaft seal keeps maintenance of these hard to get to items a breeze.
